Favorite (Fabulously Frugal) Things | Fall 2017

Crimson and gold leaves, warm sweaters, hot apple cider….there’s so much to love about fall. Here’s what I’m loving as the temperatures cool off and the daylight hours begin to shorten:

(If you missed the spring list, you can find it here, and the summer list is here. Everything on the lists is $15 or under!)

1. Oregon Chai Tea Latte Concentrate, $2.69 at Target:

It’s just not fall without chai! For less than the price of one coffee shop chai tea, you can get 32 oz of (organic!) chai concentrate; mix with equal parts of milk and heat it, or serve it over ice. Yum.

2. Pacifica Hairvana Leave-On Detangling Conditioner, $12.59 at Target:

Cooler temps in the fall mean drier hair and skin- but this vegan detangling conditioner can help you at least with dry hair. It has a tropical fragrance that’s not too overpowering and is also good for defining curls.

3. Rosemary Sweet Potatoes

This is an easy side dish that tastes delicious and is perfect for Thanksgiving. Wash and peel sweet potatoes (6-8, depending on the size of your baking dish) and slice into circles. The thinner the circles are, the faster they will bake. Coat slices in olive oil and sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper. Wash fresh rosemary and chop it into small pieces. Toss the rosemary with the sweet potato slices. Place the potatoes in a greased baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 40-60 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are soft. Enjoy!

4. Pumpkin Farms

Sure, you can always find pumpkins at grocery stores or roadside stands, but going to a local farm that sells pumpkins can be a fun weekend activity, especially with kids. They often have more variety in pumpkin sizes (the small ones make cute table decor!) and other activities like petting zoos and hay rides.

5. Hot Breakfasts

I love hot breakfasts, but don’t eat them very much during the summer. So I’m excited that it’s finally “oatmeal weather”! Oatmeal with peanut butter stirred in has been a toddler favorite around here lately; I myself like oatmeal + peanut butter + dried cranberries + chocolate chips. Dessert for breakfast! Mmmm.

I’m also looking forward to making these Breakfast Egg Cups from babyfoode.com (you can find the recipe here):

What are your favorite things about fall?

      1. Just in the microwave as it’s quick and easy and doesn’t require cleaning a pot. I have done it in the slow cooker before with steel cut oats but I found it gooey, which is not appealing to me. Thank you for asking.

  1. Fall favorites– fires in the fireplace– a couple years ago, my husband gave me a 1/2 cord of firewood for Christmas because he knows how much I love a fire!! But really by absolute favorite for fall is our kids coming home for Thanksgiving– seeing them walk in the door, having them sit around the table for a few days is the best!! Love your list of fall treats– want to try that chai! thanks. xo
