Would You Rent Your Wedding Gown?

Wedding dresses. They are almost certainly the most expensive dress that you will ever buy in your life. The average cost of a wedding dress was $1357 in 2014, making the cost per wear…$1357. For a bride who only wears a floor length gown for the ceremony and pictures (about two hours) and then changes into a more casual dress, that cost becomes $678.5 an hour. Every bride wants to look their best on their wedding day, but that often comes with a steep cost. Even a very simple dress with little to no embellishment can easily be $1,000.

Is there an alternative?

I bought my gown at Goodwill and had it altered and embellished. Had that option not been available, and if I’d known that renting wedding gowns was an option, I seriously would have considered renting.

Think about it: the dress is so expensive, it sits in our closet taking up space after the wedding, and we think, “oh I’ll pass it on to my child, grandchild, etc.,” but by the time they get married, it will probably be out of style or won’t fit them.

Rent The Runway popped up in my Facebook newsfeed one day and so I decided to check it out. They offer wedding gowns in addition to formal dresses and accessories.

These are some of my favorites:

You’d get to wear a beautiful designer gown for much less than the cost of a typical wedding dress! And if you like the idea of being able to pass down an item that you wore at your wedding to your daughter, you could always give her an item like your wedding earrings or necklace. If you want to get even more wear out of your wedding jewelry before passing it on to a daughter, consider some different options. While “wedding style” jewelry dripping with diamonds and pearls is certainly gorgeous, I knew that I probably wouldn’t wear items of that style again and they would sit unused in a jewelry box. Instead, I chose a simple sapphire earring and pendant set, and they get much more use. Every time I wear them, I am reminded of my wedding day!

If you aren’t getting married soon but are attending a formal black tie wedding or event, Rent The Runway has many gorgeous choices for gowns. If I worked at a high profile job where I needed stylish professional clothes, I’d be tempted to check out their Unlimited option as well!

  1. When I was looking for my wedding gown, the bridal shop’s sales rep made a suggestion which I followed: find a lovely bridesmaid dress that is simple and elegant, order it in white, and wear it as my wedding gown. I saved a ton while going with a classic / minimalist / beautiful gown. Love this topic, I might just have to create a blog post on it. 🙂
