10 Natural Beauty Items Under $15

“Natural” is an imprecise term when used by beauty and food companies. It does not have a regulated definition (like “USDA Organic”), but it does usually mean that a product has fewer “bad” ingredients and more naturally derived ones.  Some products will claim to be “natural” but still contain the same synthetic and artificial ingredients of their traditional counterparts. On the other hand, some “natural” products are truly plant based, but aren’t very effective and thus not worth the cost. I read alot of labels, so here are some of my favorites that I believe are closer to being “natural” than many others, while still being effective and not super expensive- they are all under $15!

1. Burt’s Bees lip balm in Mango, $3.30

I’ve tried several varieties of this lip balm, and this one’s my favorite. It goes on smoothly and is not waxy like the beeswax ones. The peppermint one is too strong a flavor to me, but the mango is perfect!

2. Burt’s Bees lipstick in Nile Nude, $9.00

This has a nice natural color, a smooth finish, and doesn’t have the weird chemical-y taste  that some lipsticks have. It claims to be of 100% natural origin.

3. Physicians Formula Organic Wear Mascara, $7.87

A natural looking mascara without a strong chemical smell. The description says “100% of the total ingredients are from natural origin” without synthetic fragrance or color.

4. Adrianne K Non-Toxic Nail Polish in “Pink Pony”, $13.99

This was $11.99 when I bought it a year ago, so the price has gone up. However, I use it sparingly so it will last a long time. Unlike most nail polishes, it has almost no stinky smell to it. Nail polish is one of those beauty items that has the most unnatural ingredients in it, but this one states that it is “5-Free,” containing no “Formaldehyde, Dybutyl Pthalate (DBP), Toluene, Formaldehyde Resin, or Camphor.”

5. Deep Steep Body Lotion in Lavender Chamomile, $9.95 for 6 oz*

This smells amazing without having artificial fragrance or ingredients in it. One of the first ingredients is aloe vera. It does a great job of moisturizing without being greasy. If you can find it at Marshalls, you’ll get a better deal on it. The coconut lime one smells great also!

*This is Amazon’s price for it, however I have found a container of Deep Steep Lotion twice the size at Marshalls for $4.99 (they just don’t always have it in stock).

6. The Honest Company Healing Balm, $14.12 (pack of 2, 6 oz total)

This plant-based balm works great on cuts and dry cuticles, as well as dry skin. You can also use it instead of petroleum-derived products for diaper rash.

7. Organic Old Fashioned Oats (for oatmeal baths), $3.01 for 30 oz

Many bath salts have artificial fragrance, but an oatmeal bath can be just as relaxing (and it’s better for your skin!) See directions below from How Stuff Works:

8. Burt’s Bees Sensitive Facial Cleansing Towelettes, $5.09 for 30 wipes

These are great for airline travel- since they aren’t a liquid cleanser, they don’t have to take up space in your quart size Ziploc bag.

9. Tom’s of Maine Deodorant in Lavender, $4.39

Smells great, effective at neutralizing odor, and non-irritating on your skin.

10. Tom’s of Maine toothpaste, $3.37

Most regular toothpastes (Crest, Aquafresh, etc.) taste way too sweet/bad to me (I think it’s the saccharin that they add). Tom’s makes toothpastes in fluoride and fluoride-free versions, and they all taste pleasant.
