The Pros and Cons of Pre-Paid Bank Cards

There are definite pluses to having a pre-paid Visa, MasterCard, etc. You can use them for online purchases where you don’t want to enter a credit or debit card number. They can also be helpful for sticking to a budget, or to limit/supervise your teen’s spending.

However, what is not widely known is that pre-paid divisions of card companies are often terrible when it comes to processing refunds back onto your pre-paid card. It can take 6-8 weeks. I have seen this happen several times to different people. Think about using these cards for items you know you won’t return (groceries, gasoline, diapers, etc.) instead of things that you may end up returning, like clothing or gifts.
