Something Old, Something New: How I Found My Perfect Wedding Dress at Goodwill!

I love telling people I found my wedding dress at Goodwill. I had no intention of stopping in that day, but as I was driving by with a friend, the thought popped into my head. We browsed the racks and didn’t see anything spectacular. Then I noticed the small rack of wedding dresses against the wall. Most were pretty hideous. But as I methodically worked from left to right, one of the very last dresses caught my eye. It was in good condition, it fit perfectly, and I even had a 25% off coupon for Goodwill with me!

The dress and train was just way too long for me though- so much fabric! I’ll just get it hemmed, I thought. But a few weeks later, as I stood in front of the seamstress while wearing the dress, I couldn’t think of what to say when she asked:

“So, what do you like about it?”

“Um…it was cheap?” I said.

She offered to tweak it a bit. A few pins later, she had completely changed the shape of the dress, and the ideas started flowing. After a few sketches, I could start to see it taking on a new style. I had already been looking through Etsy for inspiration, and from a few pictures I gave her and sketches we doodled, she created a dress, comb, and veil that I absolutely loved.

My “dream” dress was almost $2,000, but my perfect dress was less than half of that after being reimagined and reworked into a fabulously frugal gown. ♥
